A visitor from France was critically injured Friday morning in an apparent shark bite at Kekaha Beach on Kauai.
Officials said the 28-year-old sustained severe injuries to his lower right leg.
The incident happened about 9 a.m., when the man was surfing at a popular spot called Davidson’s.
Bystanders said a 12-foot tiger shark bit the man.
He was taken to Wilcox Medical Center.
Lifeguards have closed Kekaha Beach and posted warning signs. They’ll decide whether to reopen the beach Saturday morning.

Maui County Ocean Safety officers received a report around 10:20 a.m. that said the male victim was fishing in his kayak somewhere between Maui and Molokini when he was bitten by a shark.

Maui County officials say a shark attacked a kite surfer in waters off Kanaha Beach Park. Maui Officials say the victim, a man in his 40’s, was kite surfing about a 100 yards from Ka’a point when he was attacked.

MAUI SHARK ATTACK -10/23/2013 AT 4 P.M.
Officials say a shark bit a man as he was diving about 100 yards offshore from Paukukalo Beach shortly after 4 p.m. Shane Mills, 45, was treated by first responders for a three-inch laceration on his left hip. He then drove himself to the hospital.
